Biometric Categorization

Assigning people to groups on the basis of biometric data; some forms (e.g. inferring sensitive characteristics) are prohibited or strictly limited by the AI Act.

Data Act

An EU regulation governing access to and sharing of data generated by connected devices, which also affects the availability of data for training and operating AI.

Data Altruism

The voluntary sharing of data by individuals or organizations in the public interest, for example for research, as regulated by the Data Governance Act.

Data Governance Act (DGA)

An EU regulation promoting trustworthy data sharing, laying down rules for data intermediaries and the re-use of public sector data.

Data Holder

An entity that controls data generated by a connected product or service and decides on making it available under the rules of the Data Act.

Data User

An entity that, by law or contract, gains access to data and uses it under conditions laid down by the Data Act.

High-Risk AI System

An AI system falling into the high-risk category under the AI Act, subject to strict requirements on risk management, data quality, documentation, transparency and human oversight.

Relationship Between the AI Act and the GDPR

The concurrent application of both regulations, where the AI Act complements rather than replaces the rules on personal data protection; in the case of biometrics and profiling the regimes overlap.

Remote Biometric Identification

The recognition of persons at a distance on the basis of biometric data; its use in publicly accessible spaces is fundamentally restricted by the AI Act.

TDM Reservation

A reservation of rights under the rules on text and data mining, by which a rightsholder prevents the use of its content for automated analysis and training. Want to learn more?
